If you check the official website, you'll notice that it's nowhere specified that Graphtec Studio requires a persistent Internet connection in order to work properly.

Secondly, Internet might be needed in case it activates itself over the Internet, but even so, the connection with the device shouldn't be conditioned by an Internet connection.
There is also a video tutorial regarding the cutting procedures. You can learn how to add the file to the cutting window as well by watching that tutorial.
I need to cut 48 names that fit 2 across. Which settings should I use (portrait or landscape)? I need to know how to place them before I send them to the cutter.

Firstly, I recommend you set the page as Portrait. You can do this from the View menu by using the Rotate page option:

After that, rotate the objects (names) by using the Object > Rotate option:

In this way you will be able to make sure that there is enough space between objects. Set the names across using the Move option (Click to view) and then send them to the cutter. If you have issue, use the Contact Us page to get in touch with the support team.
